A Note on Insurance & Why I Operate as an Out-of-Network Provider:

Choosing to work together is a significant investment in your well-being, and I believe in being completely transparent about the financial and ethical considerations behind my practice policies. The most important reason I am an out-of-network provider and do not work directly with insurance companies is to protect your privacy and ensure our work remains entirely confidential. Here’s what that means in practice:

  • When you use insurance, your mental health diagnosis becomes part of a permanent medical record. This record can be accessed by a wide net of entities due to evolving government policies and electronic health information exchanges (HIEs), which are designed to share data between providers, insurers, and government programs. While intended for coordination of care, these systems create vulnerabilities.

    • For Neurodivergent Folks: A formal diagnosis can become a pre-existing condition, potentially impacting future insurability or life insurance premiums.

    • For Anyone: In our current climate, there are justifiable fears about how health data could be used in contexts involving immigration, security clearances, or even legal proceedings. By not billing insurance, I am not required to provide you with a diagnosis. Our work is confidential, and your private struggles remain private.

  • Insurance companies require a diagnosis to justify treatment. Often, this diagnosis must be quite severe to meet their "medical necessity" criteria. This means we have to pathologize normal human experiences like grief, stress, or relationship difficulties to get care covered.

Furthermore, insurers can and do perform "clawbacks" (technically called post-payment audits). This means they can come back months or even years later and decide they overpaid for a session. They then demand that money back from the therapist, often with little explanation. This creates an environment of uncertainty and financial instability that can subconsciously influence the therapeutic process. How can I be fully present with you if I'm worried an insurer might retroactively undo our work together?

  • Therapists are leaving insurance panels in droves because the reimbursement rates are unsustainable and often degrading. For example, Anthem BCBS recently partnered with a third-party company to cut reimbursement rates for therapists from a typical $125/session to as low as $65/session in some regions.

To provide you with the highest quality of care, to be emotionally present, engaged, and continuing my education in advanced modalities like TBRI, I must be able to run a sustainable practice. A living wage prevents burnout, resentment, and financial stress, all of which are emotional states that can unintentionally interfere with the sacredness of the therapeutic relationship. Your healing deserves a healer who is fully resourced.

  • I believe fiercely that quality mental healthcare should be accessible. While my standard rate reflects the value of specialized, private care, I hold a number of sliding scale spots.

These spots are currently full, and I maintain a waitlist for them. To help bridge this gap, I have established a Community Fund, which is directly funded by donations from other clients and community members who believe in this mission. You can apply for support from this fund to offset the cost of our sessions. This allows me to offer reduced rates without compromising my ability to keep the lights on and continue doing this work.

Investing in yourself is a courageous act. By choosing to forgo insurance, we are choosing absolute confidentiality, a treatment plan designed by you and me—not an insurance corporation—and a therapeutic relationship built on transparency and trust, without third-party interference.

  • I am licensed in Kentucky and Indiana.
